"Witness" (2020)
There is one thing you are guaranteed to see when taking a quick walk around any city block, and that is litter. In the middle of the sidewalk, stuck under a car, or spilling over the edge of a garbage can, you will always see some sort of litter or piece of garbage among the natural scenery. It almost has become a norm in today’s world. No one thinks twice when they see a stray McDonald’s bag hidden among the grass. Or when a plastic bag flies through the air on a windy day. That is a problem.
This collection of images is comprised of just five of the instances I found myself passing by and/or interacting with litter. There is nothing that angers me more than seeing a piece of garbage in the streets and not in a garbage can when it could’ve easily been avoided. The problem of excessive use of plastic and packaging, resulting in litter, in the world, is insane. As my images show, not only is this a problem on land, but also in the water. Stray pieces of garbage collect in the corners and edges of Lake Michigan, along piers and rocky areas. And this isn’t just a local problem, there are much worse instances all over the world, even in the oceans. This is a problem that seems to be right in front of our faces. What could be more obvious? Yet humans continue to ignore it and refuse to acknowledge this very serious, and soon irreversible problem in the world.
