"Places From My Past" (2022)
This collection of digital collages, titled “Places from My Past,” is the natural next step following my previous works “My Body” and “The Space My Body Takes Up.” Through layered photographs and digital textures, I focus on places that I used to frequent in my past. This is contrasting the photographs from the last series, which tackled the places I frequent now.
Unlike my last two collections, this one does not have a specific chronological order, rather they jump all over the place, similar to how these memories of the past live in my brain. These are more feelings of memories, or collective memories of a chunk of time in my life that is long gone, versus specific instances. This can be seen through snapshots of my unchanged elementary school, distorted views of the grounds of the church I attended for eighteen years of my life, blurred memories of happy times in my childhood home, and many more.
This exploration of working with digital alterations to my photographs was a step outside of my comfort zone. It opened my mind to what more I can communicate through this digital medium that I feel I have been previously limiting myself in.
