Over the Summer of 2022 I had the opportunity to attend a study abroad program in Florence, Italy where I took classes at the Santa Reparata International School of Art and Design. One of those classes was a course called Renaissance Painting Techniques where I learned, and put into practice (images below) all of the techniques used by the painters of the Italian Renaissance such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Masaccio, Raphael, Donatello, Filippo Lippi, and many more. I learned how to make my own homemade reed pen, and how to use it to create ink drawings, how to make egg tempera paint and mix my own pigments, how to gild a painting with gold leaf, and much more. This was an opportunity I will never forget, and I will take the things I learned with me for the rest of my life and integrate those techniques into the art I create in the future.
