"The Meal & the Chef (Untitled)" (2021)
Every year, for my whole life, I look forward to my grandma’s rhubarb pie in the Spring. The way she makes pie is otherworldly, especially the homemade crust. As me and my sister got older, she decided to pass along the recipe (which can be found on the next page of this document). My sister is the baker in the family, so my grandma taught her everything about it.
This collection of photographs is meant to showcase my grandma’s infamous rhubarb pie recipe, made from the hands of my sister. The first photograph shows the pie itself, fresh out of the oven. The second photograph is of my sister, the chef, or in this case, the baker.
Whenever my sister makes a pie, she always has some extra crust leftover, so it has become a tradition in my family to use that extra crust and make, what we call, “pie crust strips.” It’s pretty self-explanatory. They are perfect for a little sweet snack, and perfect for someone like me, who thinks the crust is the best part of any pie. So, that is why I chose to include a small plate of those pie crust strips in the first photograph.
Though many have tried to master the art of pie baking in my family, the way my grandma does it, no one has come even remotely close, except for my sister. It’s the perfect rhubarb flavor; a flavor that will forever remind me of Spring, my grandma, and home.
