"Imagined Space and Place: Potential (Untitled)" (2021)
To me, imagination and the potential of space go hand in hand. When thinking about this prompt I was really drawn to the idea of abstraction and how our human minds view and process spaces. While doing research on this topic and looking for inspiration, I came across a photographer on Instagram called Julian Schultze. His photography focuses on the geometric, abstract, and minimalist compositions in spaces all around him. I was really drawn to this different perspective on a typical space. I thought it fit perfectly with this idea of the potential of spaces all around us. Spaces that we see every day or have walked by hundreds of times; how can we see that in a more imaginative, and potential, light?
So, in this collection of photographs, I captured photographs of spaces in the city, that the normal eye wouldn’t even consider, and focused on just a small part of that space. I wanted to pull out every little detail, texture, and color in order to show the potential of these kinds of spaces. I also wanted to show the connections between all these places. And although all of these were taken somewhere completely different, they still have this cohesiveness to them that is brought together by the color palette, the geometric lines, and the compositions. And, in the end, these spaces belong together only in our minds, through our imaginations. Not as each individual photograph by itself, but as a whole, complete work of art.
